Prostate Cancer Center Constitution of the Prostate Cancer Center Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in male (26% of all new cancer diseases in man, RKI Germany) The Prostate Cancer Center was established for an optimal interdisciplinary and guideline-conformed diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. It is an interdisziplinary center for improvement of the quality of supply by closely cooperation of the health care providers in diagnosis, treatment and follow up care of patients with prostate cancer disease. Common strategies for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are developed in interdisziplinary conferences such as tumor boards and quality circles . Cooperation partners of the Prostate Cancer Center are: Department of Urology Department of Radiooncology Department of Hematooncology Department of Nuclear medicine Center for Radiology Institute of Pathology Furthermore there is a close cooperation with partners in psychooncology, rehabilitation, palliative care and the patient support group of prostate cancer. Specific professional competences For patients with prostate cancer exist multimodal therapy options (surgical treatment, radiotherapy, antihormonal drug treatment or combination therapies dependent on stage of the disease. Since January 2011 we perform robotic-assisted (da Vinci Si Surgical System) radical prostatectomy at the department of urology. From january to april 2011 48 patients were operated with this method (overall 59 radical prostatectomies in this period, in 2010 overall 72 radical prostatectomies). By enhancing surgical capabilities, this method offers a number of potential benefits, including less pain following the operation, less blood loss, faster and more complete functional recovery. daVinci-Operationsroboter Another therapeutic option in prostate cancer is the local radiotherapy. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy utilizing computer-controlled linear accelerators for precise radiation of a malignant tumor.IMRT is performed at the department of radiooncology since 2001, also for patients with prostate cancer disease. Certification of conformity to the professional prostate cancer center- requirements of the german cancer association will be performed in june 2011. 18.05.2011
