  2. Politics • Feudalism was the major political system of the Middle Ages. • People were ruled by kings or emperors • People must obey the rulers • Upper nobility class maintained control over the lower class

  3. Politics Continued… • King was considered a religious figure. • Upper nobility class maintained control over the lower class • Medieval Christians held that Christ was in some sense a king. • The new testament included texts that seemed to forbid Christians to use force.

  4. Religion • From birth to death, whether a peasant, a serf, a noble a lore or a king- life was dominated by the church and Medieval religion. • The lives of many Medieval people including various orders of monks and nuns were dedicated to the Catholic church/religion.

  5. Religion • Disputes of the Crusades led to the split between the Eastern and Western Christian Churches, the Great Schism • Crusade- holy wars intended to liberate Jerusalem from Muslim control

  6. Religion Continued… • The Catholic church was a very powerful institution, it was able to influence the king. • Religions of the Middle Age: Catholic, Christian, and Muslim.
