Problems Solved…ish • Europe’s problems slowly get solved • Plague died out • Warfare • Black Powder (define) – explosive powder used in cannons and guns • Nationalism (define) – feels of loyalty to your country • King’s power increases as he takes control of the armies • - Food Shortages • Able to get preservatives and food from Asia until Silk Road collapses • Society • Renaissance (define) - A period of re-discovery • Education was more available to more people • New invention, the printing press, allowed education to spread faster and to more people. • Religion was changing!

Reformation • In the Middle Ages everyone in Europe was Catholic • Martin Luther was a Catholic Priest from Germany • Believed the Catholic Church was doing some things wrong • Indulgences (define) – paying money to get forgiveness from sins. Martin Luther said this was wrong. • The Bible was only printed in Latin. Martin Luther said the bible should be printed in everyone’s own language. • Saved by faith. Martin Luther said saved by doing good things (good works) • Posted the 95 Theses on the door of a church in Germany – a list of 95 things the Catholic Church was doing wrong • Catholic Church excommunicated Martin Luther • Luther’s followers left the church and formed lots of different churches • Protestant (define) – any Christian religion that is not Catholic • Reformation (define) – period where churches outside the Catholic church were formed in Europe • Consequences: Religious persecution increases.
