  3. Economy • By 1815 factories were built at a record pace in the North • 1815-1818 Boom years • 1819 Bank of the United States failed to stop a market crash • 1820 Economic recovery

  4. Andrew Jackson as President • Won the 1828 Election • Wife Rachel died in March of the same year • Served two terms • Spoils system • Limited government

  5. Jackson and Indian Removal • Determined to remove Indian populations • Pretext was to save Indians from white settlers • Indian Removal Act of 1830 • May 1838 Trail of Tears

  6. Tariff of Abominations 1828 • High tariffs hit the South, especially South Carolina hardest • John C Calhoun and the Nullification Crisis • Jackson threatened to invade South Carolina • Reformed tariff bill passed and ended the crisis

  7. Bank of the United States • Jackson hated the bank and promised to end its charter • Nicholas Biddle • Jackson, who favored state banks, vetoed the recharter of the BUS in 1833 • Jackson ordered government tax revenue to be deposited into state or “pet” banks

  8. Martin Van Buren • Van Buren won the 1836 election • Served 1 term • Economic Panic of 1837 • One of only two people to serve as Sec. of State, Vice-President and President • Lost re-election to William Henry Harrison, the shortest serving US president (30 days, 12 hours, 30 minutes)
