  3. Celebrating Black Women Leaders in Technology I n an era defined by transformative innovation and ever-expanding digital frontiers, the contributions of Black women leaders in technology cannot be overstated. CIO Business World is honored to feature and celebrate these trailblazers who are not only shaping the future of the industry but also breaking barriers and inspiring countless individuals to follow in their footsteps. The technology sector has long faced challenges of inclusivity, with underrepresentation of women, especially Black women, persisting in executive roles. Yet, despite systemic hurdles, Black women leaders have been at the forefront of change—redefining leadership, driving innovation, and fostering diverse workplaces that reflect the breadth of talent in our society. These leaders exemplify resilience, vision, and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity. From heading major technology firms to launching groundbreaking startups, Black women leaders are making their mark across the globe. Consider Ginni Rometty, IBM’s former CEO, who championed diversity initiatives that opened doors for women in STEM, or Kimberly Bryant, the founder of Black Girls Code, an organization dedicated to teaching girls of color coding skills—a mission rooted in bridging the gap in tech education. Black women leaders bring unique perspectives to boardrooms and beyond, rooted in lived experiences and cultural insights. This diversity of thought is essential in an industry tasked with solving complex global challenges. Studies consistently show that companies with diverse leadership outperform their less-inclusive counterparts in profitability, innovation, and employee satisfaction. As such, elevating Black women in leadership roles is not merely an ethical imperative but also a strategic advantage.

  4. From the Editor’s Desk in technology. By featuring their stories, we aim to inspire future generations and contribute to a culture where diversity is celebrated and equity is prioritized. As we honor these innovators, let us also commit to advancing the systemic changes needed to ensure that their leadership becomes the norm rather than the exception. obstacles underscore the importance of mentorship, sponsorship, and policies designed to create equitable opportunities for advancement. The accomplishments of Black women in technology are a testament to their resilience and ingenuity. Yet, more must be done to ensure that their achievements are not isolated success stories but part of a broader trend toward equity. Companies must actively invest in pipelines that nurture talent from underrepresented groups, champion inclusive hiring practices, and provide platforms for Black women to lead and thrive. The time to amplify these voices and celebrate these leaders is now. Together, we can build a technology landscape that is as inclusive as it is innovative, paving the way for a future where everyone can succeed. However, systemic barriers persist. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, women of color hold less than 5% of C-suite positions in the U.S., with Black women comprising a fraction of that figure. The journey to leadership often entails navigating not only gender bias but also the compounding effects of racial discrimination. These CIO Business World recognizes the extraordinary contributions of Black women leaders who are redefining what is possible

Balancing Leadership and Life Since its launch, OAA has grown significantly, introducing programs like Awareness Bound, an 8-week educational initiative designed for underserved 5th to 12th graders. This program integrates health education with movement, encouraging an active lifestyle. Looking ahead, the fall 2025 launch of Sole Connections marks a pivotal expansion of OAA's mission. 17. How Women Leaders are breaking the Glass-Ceiling Effect and Enabling Transformations in the Modern Industry 22 | MARCH 2025 www.ciobusinessworld.com

  18. Introduction - Workplace Policies & Structures: Lack of flexibility in corporate policies and insufficient support for work-life integration often create barriers for women. profitability, innovation rates, and employee satisfaction. Women leaders actively champion diverse hiring practices, create mentorship programs, and design equitable workplaces that benefit all employees. The modern industry is experiencing an undeniable shift, women leaders are not only entering traditionally male- dominated spaces but also redefining them. The historical barriers of bias, limited opportunities, and systemic inequities are being challenged by a new wave of dynamic, high-impact women leaders who are driving innovation, fostering inclusive cultures, and reshaping business landscapes. - Pay Disparities & Unequal Growth Opportunities: Gender pay gaps and the lack of clear pathways for advancement slow down progress for women in leadership. 3. Using Transformational Leadership to Drive Innovation Industries undergoing rapid technological advancements require agile and forward thinking leadership. Women in executive roles are leading digital transformations, embracing AI-driven solutions, and integrating sustainability practices into business operations. Their adaptive and visionary leadership enables companies to stay ahead of market disruptions and remain competitive. Women Leaders Driving Transformational Change The so-called glass ceiling the invisible barrier that has hindered women's advancement into leadership roles is no longer an unbreakable force. Instead, it is being shattered by women who use strategic vision, adaptability, resilience, and transformational leadership to influence global business practices. In an era marked by digital acceleration, disruptive technologies like AI, and heightened competition, women leaders are proving to be catalysts for organizational and societal transformation. Despite these challenges, women are rewriting leadership paradigms by adopting transformational approaches that foster innovation, agility, and inclusivity. Below are some of the ways women leaders are breaking the glass ceiling and enabling industry- wide transformations. 4. Challenging and Reshaping Corporate Policies 1. Redefining Leadership with Emotional Intelligence & Empathy Women leaders are instrumental in shaping progressive workplace policies that promote work-life balance, parental leave, flexible work arrangements, and equal pay. These structural changes benefit women and create an inclusive corporate culture that supports diverse talent across all levels. Modern leadership requires more than just strategic thinking it demands a deep understanding of human capital. Women leaders bring a holistic, emotionally intelligent approach to leadership, emphasizing empathy, collaboration, and psychological safety in the workplace. This shift is transforming corporate environments, leading to higher employee engagement, improved retention, and increased productivity. The Glass-Ceiling Effect Understanding the Barriers The glass-ceiling effect is a systemic and cultural challenge that has historically prevented women from rising to senior executive positions. The root causes include: 5. Mentorship & Advocacy by Lifting Others as They Rise The importance of mentorship cannot be overstated. Many women leaders recognize the power of sponsorship, mentorship, and advocacy in closing the leadership gap. This is done through establishing programs that equip the next generation of female professionals with skills, confidence, and networks, they ensure that leadership pipelines remain diverse and robust. - Unconscious Bias & Stereotypes: Persistent biases about leadership traits being inherently masculine have long placed women at a disadvantage. 2. Fostering Inclusive & Diverse Organizational Cultures Companies led by women tend to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as core business strategies rather than as compliance checkboxes. Studies show that organizations with gender-diverse leadership teams experience higher - Limited Access to Sponsorship & Mentorship: Men historically dominate executive leadership, making sponsorship networks for women less accessible. 19. The Future of Women in Leadership, What Lies Ahead? As industries continue to evolve, the role of women leaders will only grow in importance. Organizations that fail to embrace gender-diverse leadership risk stagnation and missed opportunities in an increasingly competitive world. “Too o?en, the conversa?ons about access and inclusion happen in boardrooms far removed from the reali?es of those who need it most. 21. T listening intently to their comments while participating in a panel discussion focused on civic participation—an event we were both invited to join. Another member of their team was present as well, reinforcing their arguments and providing a united front for their perspectives. “ about AI. They extolled the potential of AI to predict human behavior and how it could lead to greater productivity and increased wealth for nations. At one moment, the duo confidently stated that sooner or later, AI would be making all the significant decisions for us. “There's no way to escape,” they maintained. I maintain a belief that positive outcomes can and will emerge, regardless of the circumstances, echoing the sentiment that “the next big thing will come from many small, meaningful changes.” here's no way to escape,” the man and woman next to me confidently asserted. I was The path to evade the pitfalls of AI lies in restoring confidence in our humanity. This is the essential revolution we need, and I am committed to contributing to this cause: our shared humanization. I utilize the power of language to craft narratives that inspire positive change and foster unity rather than exacerbate divisions. I genuinely believe that exposure to uplifting practices and exemplary actions can rekindle hope and counter feelings of resignation. I firmly disagreed with this notion. While it is true that AI is becoming increasingly pervasive, it is equally clear that its integration into society poses serious risks, such as reinforcing existing inequalities and discrimination, promoting political agendas, and manipulating public opinion. These issues can threaten our civil rights, freedoms, and the very foundation of democracy itself. The discussion centered around the impact of artificial intelligence on decision-making processes, with implications on both political and business levels. However, they completely overlooked the potential downsides of AI, opting to focus solely on the advantages it purportedly brings. This is hardly surprising, given that their work is not only centered on emerging technologies but also financially benefits from advancements in AI. To illustrate this point, I created “Afrolink,” a digital platform designed to humanize and highlight the narratives of black lives. A fundamental choice I made was to consciously avoid featuring violence. I can and do address sensitive issues, but I refuse to share graphic images of people suffering or being harmed merely to capture audience attention. Additionally, I co- created a podcast called “O Tal” with two partners, where our conversations are firmly rooted in the theme of love. We draw inspiration from bell hooks' insightful work, “All About Love.” We have witnessed similar patterns play out on social media platforms. Initially, these platforms promised to provide greater plurality and democratize access to amplify voices from marginalized communities. However, the reality has often resulted in a gain for the same powerful elites who have historically held sway. While they were passionate in advocating for their positions, their transparency was lacking, much like the algorithms they championed. To the audience, they appeared as nothing more than professors from a private Portuguese university, which made their vested interest seem merely academic. This is why I hold reservations about AI. While it does offer distinct advantages—like using language correction tools to enhance my writing—ample evidence points to its significant drawbacks. Consider the troubling instances of racial profiling in the allocation of loans, police operations, and judicial rulings. I find this approach both transformative and revolutionary, especially considering that algorithms tend to thrive on hate and polarization. Moving forward, I believe that we must focus on building a counter-power rooted in love while simultaneously creating digital communities for individuals seeking to distance themselves from the toxic influences of algorithms. In the end, love consistently provides the safest and most nurturing refuge for all. However, no reputable academic can honestly deny the troubling effects associated with artificial intelligence. This issue transcends a simple love-or- hate relationship with technology; it centers on the necessity of relying on factual evidence instead of naively trusting our personal beliefs or interests. We know that algorithms can perpetuate the inherent biases of our society because they are molded by human input, and, regrettably, we all carry our biases. So, if the claim is that “there's no way to escape,” what actionable steps can we take? This was the critical point I aimed to convey during the panel, especially after hearing their optimistic claims MARCH 2025 | 27 www.ciobusinessworld.com

  23. The Role of Technology in Transforming South Africa's Construction and Mining Industries A construction sector, it's being explored for everything from building homes to creating complex structures. This could address housing shortages, especially in South Africa, where there is dire need for affordable housing. 3D printing also offers the potential for reducing waste in construction, thus contributing to more sustainable building practices, which is essential for meeting the environmental standards that are becoming increasingly important in South Africa. s a business leader in the construction and mining industries in South Africa, I've had a front-row seat to the evolution of technology and its emerging challenges within the business sector. We're living in an era where technological innovation is reshaping industries and driving new possibilities. The advancement of technology has shown business owners that it isn't actually “business as usual”. Au contraire, it is “business like never before!”. I believe that if businesses seek to survive, and even thrive in these technological times, the key word is “Adaptability”. In this article, I'll delve into my thoughts on emerging technologies and the revolutions and touch on some of the crises that are reshaping the South African business environment. penetrate these industries at an accelerated pace, from automation and artificial intelligence (AI) to the Internet of Things (IoT) and augmented reality (AR), the possibilities are vast. The entrance of drones has been particularly interesting. Drones are transforming the way construction sites are surveyed, and mining operations are managed. In the past, surveying a large site could take days or even weeks, used to require navigating rough and often dangerous terrain. With drones however, we can conduct precise surveys in a fraction of the time, all while ensuring safety. Similarly, the integration of AI in predictive maintenance is changing how we approach equipment breakdowns, in both mining and construction. In the mining industry, the predictive technology has been helpful in identifying potential machinery breakdowns before they occur. This has improved efficiency, and, importantly, cut down costs. The crises we face While these technological revolutions are exciting, they come with their own set of challenges. South Africa's business environment is also shaped by crises that have broad implications for industries like construction and mining. The rise and impact of technology The construction and mining sectors are incredibly traditional industries. They rely mainly on established systems that have been around for decades. However, we are seeing a significant shift as technology starts to One of the most pressing challenges facing our industries is the energy crisis. The ongoing power shortages and rolling blackouts, caused by Eskom's financial and operational struggles, are severely disrupting our Another area where technology is gaining ground is 3D printing. The challenges associated with managing these types of crises require more than just technological solutions. In my opinion, they demand a delicate balance of human capital management, communication, and a focus on social responsibility. ability to operate efficiently. In the mining industry, for example, energy is one of the largest operational costs. Without a reliable power supply, it becomes increasingly difficult to meet production targets, and the financial strain is felt at every level of the supply chain. Similarly, construction projects are facing significant delays, as contractors often have to pause work or find expensive alternative power sources. impact of load shedding. While solar energy is a promising solution, its adoption requires considerable investment upfront, which may be a barrier for smaller companies or those already struggling with financial instability. Another challenge is the country's ongoing socio-political instability, which has far-reaching consequences for businesses. South Africa's economic landscape has been marred by labor unrest, rising inequality, and political corruption. The construction and mining sectors have been particularly affected by labor disputes, strikes, community protests, and more recently, illegal mining operations. For example, protests in the mining How do we navigate the way forward? The energy crisis highlights the importance of transitioning to more sustainable energy sources. Many mining and construction companies in South Africa are now turning to renewable energy, like solar power, to supplement the grid and mitigate the Despite these crises, I remain optimistic about the future of the construction and mining industries in South Africa. The key is to remain adaptable and to embrace the opportunities that technology offers, 30 | MARCH 2025 www.ciobusinessworld.com

Emerging technologies are undoubtedly revolutionising industries like construction and mining, and they are changing the way we operate. However, these advancements must be approached with a clear understanding of the crises that exist in the South African business environment. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in embracing innovation, focusing on sustainability, and working together to create a resilient, forward-looking industry. As we move further into the 21st century, I am confident that those who are able to adapt to these changes will not only survive, but they will thrive. One emerging trend that I'm particularly excited about is the growing focus on sustainability. With pressures mounting around environmental concerns, companies that are able to innovate in ways that prioritise sustainability will have a competitive advantage. For example, in construction, the development of green building technologies and sustainable materials is gaining momentum. Innovations such as energy-efficient building designs, water-recycling systems, and sustainable construction materials are paving the way for more eco-friendly projects. Similarly, in mining, there's The rise of AI and machine learning in data analytics is another avenue of potential. Mining companies, in particular, can use these technologies to optimize operations, from supply chain management to resource extraction. AI is enabling us to analyze large data and information in real time, which helps businesses make better decisions faster. The beauty of these technologies is that they allow us to manage resources more effectively, reduce costs, and improve productivity—all while minimising environmental impact.
