  2. AICE at St. Augustine High • Advanced International Certificate of Education • St. Augustine High started the AICE program in 1997. • SAHS was the 2nd school in the US to begin an AICE program.

  6. College Admissions • Rigor of HS Coursework = College Success • AICE courses get extra points from the admissions board. (Same as AP and IB) • All AICE courses used in GPA re-calculation • Including Art, General Paper, Thinking Skills, etc. • AICE Credits in College • International Counselor • “A Levels” not AICE

It’s not all about the test… • Study and appreciate literature and methods from other parts of the world • Courses prepare students for college level expectations • College Admissions Advantage • Many basic college course requirements are earned through exam credit • Ease the transition from HS to college

Conclusions • Difficult Curriculum – Demands Commitment • Powerful International Curriculum • Allows for creative, high level thinking • Analysis and application are woven throughout • Critical Analysis is the Focus • Not memorizing an overwhelming amount of facts • Continuous CIE Teacher Training • Academic Success Skills • Stressed and taught in the curriculum. (For example: Note taking, measurement, organization of data, neatness in presentation)

AICE Curriculum • Completing the Curriculum Defines Graduation Requirements • Economics not required • HOPE not required • Fine Arts not required • Online course not required • Complete Six AICE level courses – one in each academic category (earn a passing grade, sit for the exam) • Math/Science • Language • Humanities

  12. The AICE Diploma Award • The AICE Diploma Award is an internationally recognized AWARD for academic rigor – NOT the High School Diploma • Pass 6 A/AS Level Exams • Grades range from A-E • Pass at least one in each category • Math & Science • Languages • Humanities

  17. Scholarships • AICE Diploma recipients are automatically awarded the Florida Academic Scholars Award (Bright Futures) • Must complete 100 hours of community service. • SAT and ACT requirement is waived. • FLVC.org

IGCSE International General Certificate of Secondary Education = Pre-AICE AS Advanced Subsidiary = First year of a subject AL Advanced Level = Second year of a subject Candidate Student who takes exams Entry Registration for an exam Statement of Entry Individual List of exams per student Papers Individual components (tests) used to calculate the overall result of a subject exam “Sit” Candidates “sit for” (take) exams Result IGCSE = A-G, AS = a-e, AL = A-E Recognition Colleges “recognize” AS/AL for college credit Talk to International Admissions re: A-Levels CAMBRIDGE TERMINOLOGY

  24. Conflicts? • There are NO MAKE-UP exam dates • What if a student is sick? • Spring Exams are ordered in Mid January • Fall Exams are ordered in July/August • Check the individual Statement of Entry • Once ordered, there is a cancellation fee • Students must be present for all papers
