  1. Session: Engaging in Academic Discussion-Session 1 Q of the day: Do I know the elements (parts) of an effective discussion session?

  2. Academic Discussion (Discourse) Preamble: On a scale from 1-5 (1 lowest- 5 highest) • Have you had good experiences with discussions in class? • Do you feel you do well in these discussions? • Explain your answers.

Elements of Good Discussion In your Star Wars Pairs… • Make a list of what elements (parts) of a good discussion need to be present to have productiveacademic discussions • We’re going to make a list on the board so… • The empire pair will report out AT LEAST ONE ELEMENT to put on board • Debrief on this initial list (what do we think?)

  4. Can you identify elements of good discussion? We are going to watch a 4 min video of a discussion from a Pomona College class with 1st Year Students (That’s you in less than a year) Things to watch for: • How are the students having this conversation? • What does it look like? • What does it sound like? • Any other observations you notice. Elements of Good Discussion You have a chart in front of you listing and describing the elements of good discussion: • Go through each one and identify which ones you do well and which ones you struggle with (2 mins) • Turn to your Star Wars partner and discuss what you identified (2 mins- 1 min each) • Bring this out to the floor now

  7. The Questions To Guide You: What Went Wrong in New Orleans? How can the community keep governments accountable when they fail to meet their responsibilities to community members? How can the structures of democracy be strengthened to prevent the collapse of democracy?

Groups for Discussion The Jedis The Empire The discussion for the Jedis will focus on : • Summarizing, analyzing, and evaluating ALL the readings and videos we saw on Hurricane Katrina • They will help put the pieces to the puzzle together on what happened in NO according to the readings and video Question: What Went Wrong in New Orleans? The discussion for the Empire will focus on: • Presenting possible ways the community could have held government more accountable • Think of this as a “what role do govt and people play?” conversation to avoid the damage done • You’ll also use the readings and videos as evidence • Question: How can the community keep governments accountable when they fail to meet their responsibilities to community members?

Next Steps for you… • We are going to have an academic discussion the first block day of next week- • 9/27 (Pers1 &2) • 9/28 (Pers6 & 7) • You have an assignment on Course Website to complete before you come in to that discussion • Next session you’ll bring in a TYPED draft of your talking points to class for peer review
