THIS IS OUR LAST DAY TO PRACTICE • AND I WANT TO REMIND YOU EXACTLY HOW YOU WILL BE ANSWERING THE AP QUESTIONS TOMORROW. • WE MUST RESPOND DIRECTLY TO EVERY PROMPT. • YOU MUST CLEARLY UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION BEING ASKED AND THEN WORK TO ANSWER IT, ALLOWING FOR THE COMPLEXITY OF THE ISSUE. TIME TO SINK OR SWIM

  4. How to Answer the Argumentative Essay: DO IT FAST! • 1. Ask yourself: what is the author’s main point? • 2. Ask yourself: Do I agree or disagree? • Make a T-chart – clearly label both sides and compile evidence for both sides. • Pick a side • 3. Create a thesis • Your Although portion should reflect the side that you are not choosing to defend. • Although ________________________________________, _________________________________________________ because ____________, _________________, ____________.

  5. Objectives • Students will write a thesis and one paragraph for all three types of essays. (8th Period ONLY will complete the Synthesis Question) • Students will read the last 10 pages of BNW, read a summary of 1984 and compare and contrast the two, finding similarities and differences with our own world and considering Neil Postman’s argument in Amusing Ourselves to Death. (7th Period Only)

EQ • How do I write a thesis and outline for an argumentative essay in order to take into account the complexity of the issue and firmly take a stand? • What do I do when the Rhetorical Essay doesn’t make any sense? • Which nightmarish vision of the future, the Huxlean or the Orwellian, most accurately describes our current society? • To what extent is it true to say that the average American would choose happiness over truth and morals?

AGENDA • ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY 12:55 – 1:20 • YOU DORead Prompt and Write Thesis • WE DO Grade a partner’s essay. • I DO Grade with Document Camera, Highlight College Board Essays. • Rhetorical Essay 1:20 – 1:45 • YOU DO Read Prompt and Write Thesis • WE DO Grade a partner’s essay. • I DO Grade with Document Camera, Highlight College Board Essays. • FINISH BNW/ Synthesis Essay1:45 – 1:15 • Last Chapter, compare to 1984, and to Neil Postman’s Forward to Begin reading as a group, finish last chapter independently. • Final discussion as a group.

  9. This Is tough, but… • Remember the two questions that we are trying to answer • #1: • #2: • It doesn’t have to be super fancy. But you can respond intelligently to this essay. Refer to troubleshooting in your packet, if neccesary.

TIME IS UP • Switch your thesis with a partner and I want you to read it over yourself, looking to see if your partner successfully answered both questions in his/ her thesis. • If it looks good, sign it and move on. You should read three different papers. • If it needs some improvement, make some suggestions to the original author.

  11. LET’S LOOK AT THE EXPERTS… • Let’s look at what College Board really liked about this essay. • Remember, you can find all of these online at AP Central. • As we read the exemplars, ask yourself, what can I learn from this essay that would make mine better?

  12. A Look at BNW TODAY’S GOAL: To finish the story. We are going to be focused on more “big-picture” questions, in order to give us ammunition to use for our essays. Follow along on the worksheet answering the questions as we go.

  13. Synthesis essay (8th only) • Take 15 minutes to read the Synthesis Essay sources and prompt and write a thesis. • Remember to directly answer the prompt in bold! • Be as specific as possible.

Bnw, final chapter • As we finish the final chapter, we will pause to answer the final four questions on your worksheet. • Also be thinking of what symbolism this chapter might provide and insight into the author’s purpose as related to the novel as a whole. • We will also be quickly overviewing 1984 and will be comparing the two novels, especially related to Neil Postman’s Forward in Amusing Ourselves to Death
