  3. Today 1. Grammar Notes: Complex Sentences 2. Political Cartoon 3. Nonfiction: “What is your own big plan?”

  4. Complex Sentences: DO NOT COPY Take notes on p. 34 under warm-up through p.35 Remember (don’t copy): A complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause

  5. Examples: COPY When I watch Martha Graham’s S V performances, I feel like studying dance. S V Independent clause: I feel like studying dance Subordinate clause: When I watch Martha Graham’s performances

  6. Example 2: COPY In Gone with the Wind, when Scarlett is S V faced with near-starvation, she vows that S V she never will be hungry again. S V Independent clause: In Gone with the Wind and she vows Subordinate clauses: when Scarlett is faced with near-starvation and that she never will be hungry again

  7. Note: COPY Independent clauses can be interrupted by subordinate clauses. Example: All of the starsthat we can see S S V without a telescopeare part of the Milky V Way galaxy. Independent clause: All of the stars are part of the Milky Way galaxy Subordinate clause: that we can see without a telescope

  8. LASTLY: From the previous example COPY Notice in the examples that a subordinate clause can appear at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a complex sentence.

  9. For the rest of class... 1) Using the political cartoon provided, analyze the cartoon and answer the questions, put your work on p. 35 of your daybook. Do not write the questions. IT IS A CLASS SET, DO NOT WRITE ON IT. When you finish, return it to my desk. 2) Draw your own political cartoon (any topic you want (ex. bullying, drugs, etc.))! (On the same page. 35 or 36) 3) Read the nonfiction half sheet (Obama’s speech) and do the assignment. Glue/tape on p. 36 of daybook (if you don’t finish, it is homework) 4) If you finish everything, READ
