  5. Parody: A humorous imitation of another work aimed to illustrate the work’s shortcomings Clip Parody Parody Add to vocab notebook

  6. Don Quixote Idealism vs. Realism

  7. Parody • A parody is a humorous imitationof a literary work that aims to illustrate the work’s shortcomings. • A parody may imitate the plot, characters, or style of another work, but usually exaggeratesthose characteristics. • As you read, think about why this work is a parody of chivalry and stories about knights.

  8. Filling in the ‘ideal knight’ • On what does a knight usually ride? A trusty steed!

  9. Ideal knight • What does a knight wear? armor and chainmail!

  10. Ideal knight • Who is a knight usually fighting to save? (In fairy tales especially) A damsel in distress or a fair lady!

  11. Ideal knight • What/Who does every knight need for an assistant? (Hint: Wart was this for Kay in the story we just read about King Arthur) A young squire!

  12. Ideal knight • Finally, what kind of enemy do we usually picture a knight fighting? (Think of the end of the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty!) A dragon!!

  13. What to do with the ‘your version’ column • For the last column, you should be filling in examples from your own life that would be equivalent. For example, if I was filling it in about me, I would say the following: • trusty steed= my trusty mom car • armor= my black teacher pants • fair lady=my dog • trusty squire= my friends • dragon= outside negative influences

  14. Don Quixote~ pg. 1011 • Read

  15. Don Quixote parodies typical knights’ tales • Sword in the Stone

  16. Cultural Conflict: Mothers and Daughters • (31-52 min.) • Take notes on page 88
