Explore the concept of parody in literature through the lens of idealism versus realism using examples from "Don Quixote" and "Animal Farm." Understand how parodies aim to highlight the shortcomings of the original works. Take notes for a Socratic seminar on cultural conflicts portrayed in "Animal Farm" and reflect on personal equivalents to the ideal knight's traits.

Don Quixote Idealism vs. Realism
Parody • A parody is a humorous imitationof a literary work that aims to illustrate the work’s shortcomings. • A parody may imitate the plot, characters, or style of another work, but usually exaggeratesthose characteristics. • As you read, think about why this work is a parody of chivalry and stories about knights.
Filling in the ‘ideal knight’ • On what does a knight usually ride? A trusty steed!
Ideal knight • What does a knight wear? armor and chainmail!
Ideal knight • Who is a knight usually fighting to save? (In fairy tales especially) A damsel in distress or a fair lady!
Ideal knight • What/Who does every knight need for an assistant? (Hint: Wart was this for Kay in the story we just read about King Arthur) A young squire!
Ideal knight • Finally, what kind of enemy do we usually picture a knight fighting? (Think of the end of the Disney version of Sleeping Beauty!) A dragon!!
What to do with the ‘your version’ column • For the last column, you should be filling in examples from your own life that would be equivalent. For example, if I was filling it in about me, I would say the following: • trusty steed= my trusty mom car • armor= my black teacher pants • fair lady=my dog • trusty squire= my friends • dragon= outside negative influences
