Assessing Intimate Partner Violence in Idaho Idaho Maternal, Infant & Early Childhood Home Visiting Program Idaho’s MIECHV Home Visiting Programs The Idaho MIECHV program contracts with four local organizations in Kootenai, Shoshone, Jerome, and Twin Falls counties to serve eligible women, infants, young children, and their families through evidence based home visiting programs (shown on the map to the left). Local MIECHV programs began serving families during the summer of 2012. Kootenai and Shoshone Twin Falls and Jerome = MIECHV Home Visiting Program = MIECHV Service Area

Attitudes toward Intimate Partner Violence in Idaho Idaho Maternal, Infant & Early Childhood Home Visiting Program • Statewide: 36 Rural/Frontier Counties, 8 Urban counties • Idaho MIECHV Service Area: • Urban: Kootenai & Twin Falls counties • Rural/Frontier: Jerome & Shoshone Counties • Issues: • Only 8 Domestic Violence Courts across the state • Rural/Frontier communities in Idaho tend to be patriarchal • High levels of isolation • Tolerance of sexual violence • Dilemma of States Rights vs. Federal Law • Positive Changes through the Idaho Coalition’s advocacy for: • Consistent statutes, rules and policies • Increasing prevention awareness • Statewide efforts that promote individual respect and cultural competency Map courtesy of Idaho State University: http://www.netstate.com/states/maps/id_maps.htm, November 2013

CHALLENGES AHEAD Idaho Maternal, Infant & Early Childhood Home Visiting Program • 22% of caregivers participating in home visits are men • Safety concerns: choosing an offsite location or asking “could you walk me to my car?” • Building on the strengths of both male and female caregivers, in addition to assessing risk. • 70% of women who had a late completion of an RA are still enrolled • Rapport building: For some women, talking about IPV within 3 months can feel like too much too soon. • 83% of the women who did not complete an RA are no longer enrolled • Retention: how can we better retain families with high needs?
