Relief sculpture is an art form that projects from a flat surface, offering visual depth and interest. It can be categorized into high relief, which extends significantly from the background, and bas relief, which is more subtly raised. This project invites you to create a relief sculpture sized between 8.5” x 11” and 16” x 20”. You may choose to work with materials like Celluclay, cardboard, or molding materials. Options for subject matter include geometric or organic non-representational forms, or recognizable representational art inspired by real life.

RELIEF SCULPTURE FORM THAT EXTENDS FROM A BACK GROUND OR FLAT SURFACE. IT CAN ONLY BE VIEWED FROM ONE DIRECTION.
High Relief • Form that extends half way out of the back ground or flat surface that it is built on. • Can actually cast shadows and have holes and crevasses.
Bas Relief/ low relief • Form that is almost flat and very slightly coming off of the background plane.
Non Objective Art • Form that isn’t representational of anything • Form that uses primarily un-representational geometric or organic shapes to create it.
Representational Art • Form that is recognizable as being an exact replica, or abstraction of a real person, place, or thing. • Inspired by real life, not just reminiscent of it
Your mission is : • Create a relief sculpture with in the size of 8 1/2” x 11” to 16” x 20”. Materials: • Celluclay/ paper pulp, railroad board, cardboard, armature materials if needed, molding materials. Subject matter choices: • A geometric/ organic non-representational form • A representational form that is recognizable as something.
