  5. Functions For Misbehaviour All behaviour has a purpose and it serves a function to get a need met. • Some commonly occurring ‘reasons’: • To communicate needs • To gain recognition/attention • To gain power/independence • To seek revenge

Externalizing Get out of their seats Yell, talk back, and curse Disturb peers Hit or fight Ignore the teacher Complain Argue excessively Destroy property Do not comply with directions Have temper tantrums Don’t get along with their peers etc Internalizing Delayed speech and language Inadequate age - appropriate social skills Anxious Withdrawn Shy Phobias Sensory issues Other developmental issues etc Emotional or behavioural difficulties

What is Behaviour Management? • All behaviour is different in different settings/situations e.g. school vs home Negotiable or non- negotiable? • “disruptive and naughty” behaviour • Challenging but within normal boundary • Emotional and behaviourial difficulties • Persistent • May be apparent through withdrawn, passive, depressive, • aggressive tendencies e.g., Get out of their seats e.g., Hit or fight, Destroy property

  13. Behaviour change Child is trying to communicate his needs through his behaviour, although may be inappropriate. • What can you change? • How can you change it? Can or cannot Want or Don’t want?

  17. What can we do? • Intervene before child misbehave e.g. provide positive attention, praise? rules and rewards? teaching new skills? etc. • If child still misbehaves? e.g. consistent discipline, consequences
