Safer Communities Promoting urban safety for citizens is not primarily about policing and relying on the penal system for crime prevention it is also about the design and planning of public space and . its impact on social urban developmentincreasing choices for men and women, girls and boys to move freely without threat, harassment, sexual assault, rape, or intimidation . Policy Citizen Focused Services PJA 2006 - Minimum Standards Section 17 renewed Duty in exercising functions to seek to preventcrime and disorder including anti-social and other behaviour adversely affecting the local environment, and the misuse of drugs, alcohol and other substances in its area. Neighbourhood Policing and Neighbourhood Management Access - to local policing services through a named point of contact Influence - over policing priorities in their neighbourhood Interventions - joint action with partners & the public Answers - sustainable solutions & feedback on what is being done

North Tyneside - example Small dedicated Neighbourhood Management Team (NMT) leads the development of the initiative, working with residents, community groups, councillors and service providers. Identifies local needs and priorities and then puts in place initiatives to improve the local area and get things done. NMT is accountable to local residents and visibly taking responsibility at the sharp end. NMT plays a major role in supporting voluntary and social enterprise activity, and in helping develop residents associations and community groups.etc
