  4. Planning the Lecture/Presentation The audience (Who are they ?) # Purpose (What do you want to achieve at the end of the lecture ?) In what situation are you lecturing / Presenting ? (for example, logistics) Subject matter (What they are expecting from you and your subject matter ?) How much time available for your lecture ? Where ? (The place) BKB/NASC/2018

  5. Preparing for the Lecture/Presentation • Draft the lecture • Rehearse sufficiently before the real delivery • Plan and prepare visual aids if necessary or available • Careful about available time (Respect the clock) BKB/NASC/2018

Limitations of Lecture Method • Often one way communication • Learners are passive • It violates the principle of ‘learning by doing’ ( you cannot impart skills by using lecture method ) • Mere lecture can not hold participants’ attention for long time {Renner(1993), recommends that lecture should last no longer than 60 minutes without giving any energizer or a break} BKB/NASC/2018

Questioning Techniques One of the most effective techniques a trainer can use during a lecture to help ensure interaction is to ask and encourage questions. • Ask questions for entire group (but, be aware about the assertive participants). • Target a question to a specific participant. • Use participants’ names when asking and answering questions – this recognition is a powerful motivator. BKB/NASC/2018

Contd… Questioning Tec. • Provide positive reinforcement when participants respond. • Repeat participants’ questions and answer to ensure that all participants hear the discussion. • When a participant asks a question, the trainer can answer the question directly, respond by asking the participant a different related question or offer the question to the other participants. Handling Questions • Listen attentively • Understand yourself • Identify the needs (analyze what they really wants to know) • Compliment for question • Avoid debates, and • Don’t say “sorry, I don’t know the answer to that” instead you can say, I don’t know but I will find out and get back to you later.” BKB/NASC/2018

  12. Tips for Effective Lecture • The first few minutes of a lecture are important. Plan them well ! • Verbal communication skills are critical. These includes appropriate voice projection, using participants’ names, using examples and providing praise. • Non-verbal communication skills also are very important. These includes eye contact, positive facial expressions, gestures, postures and movement BKB/NASC/2018

  13. Tips contd……… • Effective questioning and interaction are critical to the success of the lecture. Questioning skills include planning question in advance, asking a variety of questions, using participants’ name and providing positive feedback. • The lecture should be summarized by asking for questions, asking questions and using media to review main points.
