Why • The cause of these incidents include: • A working environment where there are bump hazards from equipment and plant; • A lack of care and attention while working in areas where there are bump hazards; or • Lack of awareness and failure to recognise the hazards and wear the appropriate protective equipment: safety helmets, bump caps. There has been a number of incidents involving staff working in tight or congested areas around scientific equipment or site infrastructure which have resulted in relatively minor bumps to heads. 3. Learning • When undertaking or managing the work of others, including contractors: • Ensure that bump hazards are marked with warning tape or covered with protective foam; and • Remember to wear protective equipment – lighter bump caps may be more appropriate than helmets.
