Embracing Life's Uncertainty: Lessons from James 4:13-17

Life is fragile and brief, as emphasized in Scripture. James warns us that life is uncertain and encourages us to seize the moment. We often forget how quickly things can change, leading to lost opportunities for doing good. In James 4:13-17, we are reminded to act decisively and live righteously without delay. Instead of living in fear, we should focus on forgiveness and overcoming sin. Now is the time to reflect on the good we need to do in our lives and take action. Don’t wait; embrace the present and live with purpose.

  1. James 4:13-17 What is Your Life?

  2. Life is uncertain!

  3. Throughout Scripture, we learn the truth of life’s brevity. • “Truly as the Lordliveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death” (1 Sam 20:3). • “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good” (Job 7:6-7).

  4. We’ve all known people who were here one minute and with the Lord the next. • In our text, James speaks to some people who had forgotten that Life is Uncertain!

  5. JAMES 4:13-16

  6. Since “Lifeis Uncertain,” how should we live? • Some live in fear. • James, however, tells us the way to live: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (v 17). • Often talk about “sins of omission” from this text. • But, the context is: “Because life is uncertain, I need to do the right thing NOW!”

  7. Be a Christian now (2 Cor 6:2). • Forgive now. • Put away sin now.

  8. Think seriously about what good you need to do in your life. Do it now!
