  2. How the Pact Began • Hitler wanted to acquire Poland without force • Hitler and Stalin did not want a two front war -Split Germany - Caused loss

  3. The Economic Agreement • Ribbentrop (German Foreign Minister) and Molotov (Soviet Foreign Minister) signed on August 19, 1939. • Soviets: Food & Raw Materials • Germany: Furnished Products {Ex: Machinery} • German bypass British blockades

  4. Nazi Soviet Pact {German-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact and Ribbentrop Molotov Pact} • Stated that: -No attack -Problems handled peacefully -Wouldn’t get involved in war {Supposed to last 10 years…lasted less than two}

  5. Secret Protocol • Affected Eastern Europe • Germany was giving the Soviets the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). • Poland was also to be divided between the two • Soviets feel secure

  6. Impacts from the Pact • Nazis attacked Poland in the morning on September 1, 1939 • British declared war on Germany and World War II had begun • Germany was successful it its attempt to safeguard itself from a two-front war • Germany attacks Soviet Union on June 22, 1941

  7. Pact Broken • Hitler’s attack led to the Battle of Stalingrad • Caused mistake similar to Napoleon
