Background! • Hitler planned on taking over Poland, after annexing Austria • Germany knew this would cause a “two-front” war that they would certainly lose • Germans learned from WWI that splitting their army was not the best idea • The Soviets feared Germany, so they were glad to create a pact with them

  3. August 14,1939… • Ribbentrop met with the Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov in Moscow to in order to begin draft two pacts • The Economic Agreement • Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact

  5. The Economic Agreement August 19, 1939 • Each side provided goods and products that were rich in their country • The Soviets provided food and raw materials • The Germans provided machinery and furnished products

  6. Now to the Good Stuff • August 23, 1939: • The Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact stated each side would not attack the other • Drafted to last for 10 years…. Only lasted for 2 • The Soviet Union could not come to the aid of Poland, that Germany would not have to fight a war on two fronts • However there was a “secret addendum” added to the pact

  7. “Secret Protocol” • Germany “gave” Soviet Russia the Baltic states: • Estonia • Latvia • Lithuania • They also agreed to split Poland down the middle *The Nazis and the Soviets kept the terms of the pact and the protocol until Germany's surprise attack and invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941
