Individual Planning • ASCA suggested time spent: • 25-35% of high school counselors’ time • 15-15% middle school • 5-10% elementary • Time should be spent with all students, not just “troublesome” students.
Why should be spend time on educational/career counseling? • More occupations require postsecondary and earning gaps have widened. • Adelman/LTED study show that elementary/middle school habits form future educational goals • Trusty 2003- only half of U.S. students in college who intend on earning a bachelor’s do so in eight years
Should we insist that all students to attend college? • No- “Failing to challenge students to examine the plausibility of their college plans has serious opportunity costs-it prevents them from seeing the importance of high school, it prevents them from taking the additional efforts that might make their plans more likely to come true, and it prevents them for preparing for alternative outcomes” (Brown & Trusty 2005, p.344) • Use formal/informal educational and career assessment, use test scores, GPA, create student portfolios etc., and provide students with viable options
