  2. Swat Valley, Pakistan Quick discussion: What do you know about Pakistan? What do you picture when you hear people talk about Pakistan?
  3. Brief history of Pakistan On August 15, 1947, at midnight, colonial India gained its independence from England and split into three parts – today’s Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. Muslims from all over India traveled to find a home in Pakistan At the same time, many  Hindus and other non-Muslims left Pakistan for India.  The transition to independence, however, was far from peaceful.  Hundreds of thousands were killed: Muslims on their way to Pakistan, as well as non-Muslims leaving for India.
  4. Brief history of Pakistan Due to conflicts in Afghanistan (Pakistan’s neighbor to the west), in 2007 the militant Islamist Taliban came to power in the Swat Valley. They used public floggings and executions to punish those who defied the Taliban’s very strict and conservative interpretation of “Sharia” (Islamic law derived from the Koran and other Islamic writings).   Opposed to the education of women, the Taliban burned down hundreds of girls’ schools across the region.   They threatened teachers and female students who continued to pursue an education, forcing many to give up their careers, their education and their dreams.
  5. MalalaYousafzai On July 12, 1997, MalalaYousafzai was born in Mingora, Pakistan, located in thecountry's Swat Valley. Yousafzai attended a school that her father founded. After the Taliban began attacking girls' schools in Swat, Malalagave a speech on girls’ education in Pakistan in September 2008. In early 2009, Yousafzai began blogging for the BBC about living under the Taliban's threats to deny her an education. On October 9, 2012, a man boarded the bus Malala was riding in and shot Malalain the left side of her head; two other girls were also injured in the attack. Because Malala was critically injured, she was transferred to a hospital Birmingham, England. After multiple surgeries, she was able to begin attending school in Birmingham in March 2013. Because Malala remains a staunch advocate for the power of education, the Taliban still considers her a target. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Price in 2013 and has been nominated again in 2014.
