Agenda • Introduction of the “MakeTheRightCall” Campaign • Our Partners • Campaign Goal • Why? • The Campaign’s Purpose • Review Campaign Support Materials • How you can engage • Wrap-Up
Introduction • We’re excited to introduce you to the YourHealthMatters Campaign that we’re a part of. • Have you ever wondered if you were making the best decision for you, your clients or your loved ones about when it’s time to visit the Emergency Department versus the primary care physician? Of course you have; we all could use some help in this area! It is for that reason that . . . • YourHealthMatters has launched a community-wide effort to help you MakeTheRightCall when medical attention is needed. You and those you care about get the best quality and cost efficient care when you have a primary care physician who knows you. We want to help you be prepared to know when it’s appropriate to call a primary care physician and when it’s appropriate to go to the Emergency Department. We will even show you how to find a primary care physician that is the best fit for you or those you care for.
Title Our Goal The “MakeTheRightCall” campaign is focused on reducing Emergency Department visits in support of a community goal to reduce visits by 10%.
Our Partners • The Health Collaborative is proud to unveil the, “MakeTheRightCall” campaign in partnership with: • The Health Collaborative Consumer Council
Why Do Some Consumers Misuse the ED? • They are unaware of the types of ailments that can be treated conveniently and affordably by a primary care physician • They do not have a primary care physician • They perceive it as more convenient or more affordable • Uncertainty about access to their doctor on nights and weekends • They are unaware that they can receive better quality care for non-emergency ailments by seeing a primary care physician who: • Knows them • Knows their medical history • Can help them understand when to call them and when to seek the services of an Emergency Department
Emergency Department Visits • The top five diagnosis seen by Emergency Departments in Greater Cincinnati are: • Abdominal pain • Urinary tract infection • Headache • Chest pain • Upper respiratory infection • *reference from the Greater Cincinnati Health Council
The Consequences of Misusing the ED • Does not allow for care that considers a patient’s documented medical history, which is necessary for the highest quality care • In the long run, it’s not more convenient or more affordable • Prevents Emergency Departments from tending to true medical emergencies quickly • Drives up overall health care costs across Greater Cincinnati
The Campaign’s Purpose • Raise awareness of benefits of using primary care physicians for non-emergency ailments • Inform on the reasons for misuse of the Emergency Department • Create a social media dialog with consumers, decision-makers, and other key stakeholders about their “MakeTheRightCall” experiences and opinions • Provide a resource people can use to help them MakeTheRightCall: YourHealthMatters.org
The Campaign • Social Media • Videos • Informational materials • Public relations • YourHealthMatters website: www.YourHealthMatters.org
“MakeTheRightCall” Informational Material • A leave-behind tool to raise awareness about: • Appropriate use of the Emergency Department • Importance of having a good relationship with a primary care physician • Should be distributed to your members, employees and clients
Using the “MakeTheRightCall” Materials • Talk with your clients about developing a relationship with a primary care provider and about being prepared to MaketheRightCall should an emergency come up. Also: • Leave two copies of the informational material in patient homes • Distribute informational materials to your members, partners, and at events • Engage in the social media campaign; learn about, share, and utilize posted materials; visit YourHealthMatters.org and become familiar with the tools and resources available on the site.
Videos to Support the Campaign • Enclosed in your Toolkit are two of the three videos: • MakeTheRightCall: When you need medical attention who do you call? We went to the streets and asked Cincinnatians, When you need medical attention, who do you call? • MakeTheRightCall: Know the Difference (Raise awareness of the capabilities of and differences between a primary care physicians office and an Emergency Department) • Our next video will be available on www.YourHealthMatters.org • MakeTheRightCall(stories of individuals who learned how to make the right call based on their experience)
How You Can Engage • On the first Wednesday of the month our friends on Facebook share a story about how they or one of their patients or members made the right call. The story with the most “Likes and Shares” will get a $50 gift card. • Participate in the social media discussion • Share posts with friends and followers • Use the informational materials provided with your members, employees, clients, etc. • Encourage people to use YourHealthMatters.org for support in finding a primary care physician
