  4. Music –Things to Keep in Mind • Music titles vary by country / publisher / arrangement

Music titles may have names given by composer and/or popular names (Uniform titles) “The Abduction from the Seraglio” = Die Entfuerhrung aus dem Serail “The Firebird” = Zhar-ptitsa “Moonlight Sonata” = Sonata no. 21 in C Major, op. 53 • Music titles may be named by key, opus numbers, or catalog numbers “Minute Waltz” = Op. 64, no. 1 in D-flat Mozart = K. Bach = BWV

  6. Music recordings often contain multiple works

  7. Works may be arranged for different instrumentation

  8. There is no correlation between composed music, performed music, and recorded music

  9. Searching Rules of Thumb • Larger works (10 mins or more) • Author searches • Limiting by material type • Use Uniform titles to help you • Composer’s given title • Work with number and opus • Generic titles (Plurals)

  10. Rules of Thumb Shorter works are often not analysed in library catalogs • Shorter works may be part of a larger work • Agnus Dei, etc. = mass • Aria = opera • Song = cycle or musical Help: InfoLinks, Google, Grove Dictionary, scores, other reference sources in PAM

  11. Rules of Thumb • Other short works • Keyword with composer name and some detail • detail = opus #, key (without minor / major), word from title • Limit by material type

  12. Searching Heirarchy – Uniform title • Composer + known title • Composer + opus number • Composer + Small genre (plural) – waltzes (t) • Composer + large genre – Piano music (t) • Composer + really big genre – Works (t)

  13. Popular Music • Search by Performer • Search by Subject (genre) – Jazz Music, Rock Music • World Music • Keyword on type of music • Subject – ex. Music Bolivia • Some schools - HRAF cultures • See Garland Encyclopedia of World Music

  14. Remember… • Sometimes person looking for a recording is looking for something else • Translation • Libretto • Performers are also authors
