Music recordings often contain multiple works
There is no correlation between composed music, performed music, and recorded music
Searching Rules of Thumb • Larger works (10 mins or more) • Author searches • Limiting by material type • Use Uniform titles to help you • Composer’s given title • Work with number and opus • Generic titles (Plurals)
Rules of Thumb Shorter works are often not analysed in library catalogs • Shorter works may be part of a larger work • Agnus Dei, etc. = mass • Aria = opera • Song = cycle or musical Help: InfoLinks, Google, Grove Dictionary, scores, other reference sources in PAM
