Ecosystem Services • Ecosystem services are the benefits that humans receive from natural ecosystems • These benefits include a variety of natural resources and processes, like the decomposition of waste, the purifying of air, clean water, pollution control, and pollination. • Ecosystem services preserve human life.

  3. The Preservation of Ecosystem Services • Because ecosystem services are given to humans for free and humans may even not recognize their services, these services are often ignored and not cared for properly. • It is estimated that sixty percent of Earth’s ecosystem services are being degraded. • Humans need to start preserving our ecosystems, or else we will use up all of our resources.

  4. Renewable Resources • A renewable resource is a natural resource that can be replaced by nature faster than humans use its benefits. • Some examples of these are geothermal and solar energy.

  5. Nonrenewable Resources • Nonrenewable resources, however, are resources found in nature that are not being replaced as humans use them. Some examples are oil and coal. • Nonrenewable resources are an ecological issue because we are using these resources much faster than they are being replaced. We must start to conserve them, or they will be gone and we won’t be able to use their services.
