Born as Sofia Scicolone , she eventually changed her name to Sophia Loren after her first film • Born in Rome, Lazio, Italy on September 20, 1934 • Is currently 74 years old • Many say the key to her success was the Italian producer Carlo Ponti. Carlo was the person who discovered her, mentored her career, and eventually married her. He first saw her (he was the judge) at the Miss Rome competition when she was only a teenager, and signed her to an acting contract • She was selected as an extra in this film which was called Quo Vadis, this is what began her acting career BACKROUND OF SOFIA LOREN

  3. Sophia was among one of the most successful international stars during the post war era. (World War II) • 1953 is when she got her big break in the film Aida with Gina Lollobrigida, after her success from this film it then led her to nine films in just that year. • She made her American film debut in 1957 in Boy on a Dolphin and was the only person ever to win an acting Oscar for a foreign language film -- Two Women (1961) -- until fellow Italian Roberto Benigni did in 1999. During the next few years she appeared with well-known American actors like Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra • By the end of the 50s she returned to Italy and filmed Two Women, which earned her the acting Oscar. • Her career began to wind down in the 1970s. She moved to the United States later, and has appeared in some movies, promoted her perfume and eyewear, and wrote her autobiography, Sophia: Living and Loving. • In 1991 she was awarded a special Oscar for career achievement. Her most notable recent appearance was in Robert Altman's Ready to Wear in 1994, once again teaming her with MercelloMastroianni.
