Imperfect: the action (verb) occurred in the past but over a period of time • In English we use ‘was ____ing,’ ‘were ____ing,’ ‘used to _____,’ or ‘kept on ____ing’ • In Latin BA signals that a verb is imperfect • Examples: plaudebat he was clapping emebant they were buying agebat he used to do superabant they kept on overpowering imperfect

Perfect: the action (verb) occurred in the past and only once • In English we use ‘_____ed,’ ‘has ____ed,’ or ‘have ____ed’ to say that an action occurred once in the past • In Latin the 3rd principle part signals that a verb is perfect. Usually the 3rd principle part has one of these special letters: SUVX But if it doesn’t, memorizing the 3rd principle part is always a sure answer. • Examples: plausit he clapped emerunt they bought egit he has done (did) superaverunt they have overpowered perfect
