What we are building on • ALE: multiple degree structure • Structure: Year 1 at homeYear 2 abroad, L1Year 3 abroad, L2Year 4 at home. • Certification: three degree certificates • Problems: new partners / modified degrees of existing partners: - questions are asked about Learning Outcomes- universities require more than 60 ECTS at their institution before they grant their degree. AEL: Joint Bachelor degree Certification: one degree certificate, co-signed Structure: same as ALE Learning Outcomes: same for all the AEL “paths” Curriculum (240 ECTS): - ingredients selected from existing local courses; - a minimum of 48 ECTS for each of the foreign languages & 30for the “applied subjects”. Obstacles: national legislations (mainly) Ghent: no “recognition”; Cologne: no acceptance of joint character; Aix: positive comments. 2. What we hoped to achieve ALE/AEL Meeting5-8 May 2011

Where we are now • Cologne, Aix, Granada, Limerick may continue their ALE agreements among themselves (leading to dual or triple degrees), henceforth under the AEL umbrella • However: Aix: 4-year formula is under threat • Granada: adjustments needed now that the new Grado is phased in. • Aston, Ghent can co-operate as “associate AEL members”: • they issue “exchange certificates” for the 60 credits that students from AEL partners study with them; • likewise, their students receive “exchange certificates” when they study at Cologne, Aix, Granada, Limerick. • Heriot-Watt may now explore its position and find out in which of the above ways it can co-operate • Examples: • A student studying at Cologne (home), Aix & Granada, receives a degree certificate from all three universities • A student studying at Cologne (home), Granada and Ghent, receives a degree from Cologne & Granada, and an exchange certificate from Ghent • A student studying at Ghent (home), Cologne and Aix, receives his/her Ghent degree and two exchange certificates (one from Cologne, one from Aix) ALE/AEL Meeting5-8 May 2011

  6. 4. Where we are heading • We remain interested in the Joint formula. If Aix gets the go-ahead, other partners may decide to re-apply. • Meanwhile, we choose to define the AEL broadly; it is a project in which a consortium of universities  promote a 4-year Bachelor programme with two years abroad, leading to the AEL learning outcomes,  and with varying types of certification depending on the “path” followed. (Where we are heading) • We agree to sign an AEL agreement to this effect later in 2011. • We also agree to specify, in two Annexes to the agreement: • Our intended student flows for the next few years (itineraries and numbers) • Details of our academic calendars, with exam periods and deadlines for communicating marks to partners.
