  2. Groups! You have 10 min. to work on your questions. Please write your responses up on the white board or sheet of paper if you were given one.

  3. Networks 1. All organ. are info. processors - As they grow, it needs a system for managing info. 2. Comm. pathways develop that direct the flow of info. throughout the organ. = networks. Some networks are formal others informal. 3. Formal Networks are designed by mgt. to dictate who should talk to whom to get a job done. 4. Types: a. Downward: a supervisor sends a message to one or more employees. Types on pg. 12 b. Upward: messages flow from employees to supervisor. Types on pg. 14 c. Horizontal (Lateral): messages btw. members w/equal power. Types on pg. 16

  4. We will assess Metro Clinic’s formal network before and after Beverly implemented the color coded system.By the end of our discussion, you should be able to answer this essay question, “describe three strengths and three weaknesses of Beverly’s color-coded system at Metro.”

  5. Volunteers in the middle, you have 45 sec. to accomplish your task GO!

  6. Volunteers: “Raise your hand if you accomplished your task?” “What made accomplishing your task difficult?”

  7. Share your observations how this exercise simulated the fiasco that erupted at Metro Clinic due to their poorly designed formal network. (Quote the case study as much as you can when covering this issue).

  8. Analysis of Beverly’s color coded system.“What type of formal networks did the color coded system address?”

  9. Group 1List at least 5 strengths of Beverly’s color coded system. When listing each strength, include a positive gain that may result from creating it.

  10. Group 2List at least 5 weaknesses that still need to be addressed with the hospital’s formalnetwork.

  11. Group 3List at least 5 benefits for companies that design properly functioning formal networks? Use real world examples to illustrate your ideas.

  15. #4: Facilitate a group discussion making recommendations on how to address theproblem. How did I accomplish this?

  16. #5: Design an exercise that will engage the whole class in meaningful discussion or analysis of the case. Do not strictly lecture. Be creative when thinking howto get everyone involved.

  17. #6: Final discussion should link organ. comm. concept/theory identified in the case to our workplace lives. Address: “How could learning this concept/theory enhanceour workplace?” How did I accomplish this?
