  5. Main organization • NOW (National Organization for Women) • Set to break down barriers of discrimination in education and the work force. • Attacked stereotypes of women

  7. Chicano Movement Successes in Civil Rights Movement and the Women’s Rights Movement opened the door for other movements. Mexican Americans, known as Chicanos, are the largest group of US Latinos 1942 Mexican immigrants came to the US under the farmhand program.

  8. 3 Main Goals • 1. Restoral of land rights (Mexican American War) • 2. Rights for farm workers • 3. Educational reforms (bilingual education)

  9. 1960s and 1970s Latinos increasingly fought for equal rights. -Campaigned to elect politicians who represented their interests.

  10. Cesar Chavez Leaders UFW (United Farm Workers) used nonviolence, strikes and boycotts of grapes. Fought for rights for farm laborers -people migrated from farm to farm and from state to state. -long hours, horrible conditions, no benefits

  11. Chicano Movement grew from that. There is a bigger movement – political, social movement increasing Latino’s awareness of their history and culture. Chavez focused mainly on farm workers
