Freshmen Perspectives on New Graduation Requirements: A Survey Analysis

This survey, conducted by Caitlin Park and Eli Harris at Juab High School, aimed to assess freshmen's feelings towards updated graduation requirements. By utilizing biased questions, we developed two surveys—one supporting and one opposing the new requirements. Out of 177 freshmen, 15 were randomly selected to participate. Results indicated that approximately 85% of freshmen were indifferent or supportive of the changes, with only 15% expressing dislike. The initial bias did not skew results as anticipated, suggesting a neutral stance among students. Future surveys could improve methodology and sampling.

  1. How do the Freshmen Feel? A survey conducted by Caitlin Park and Eli Harris

  2. The Purpose The purpose of our survey was to find out how the freshmen feel about the new graduation requirements for their grade.

  3. The Population The population for our survey were the freshmen of Juab High School.

  4. We chose to use leading questions to lead the student being surveyed to give a specific answer to the final question. Using this bias, we were able to create two biased surveys; one survey in favor of the new graduation requirements and one against them. The Bias

  5. Survey Instruments Biased For Biased Against Unbiased

  6. Sampling Procedure We got a list of all the freshman, assigned each student a number between 001-177, used the calculator to randomly select 15 students for each survey (skipping repeated numbers). We then took a copy of the assigned survey to each student and asked them to fill it out.

  7. Non-Response Some of the issues we had with non-response were people that weren’t able to find and one person was no longer attending this school. We had two students from the unbiased survey, one from the biased in favor survey, and one from the biased against survey.

  8. The Results Male Surveys Female Surveys

  9. Results (continued) 7% 56%

  10. Conclusion & Analysis The majority of freshman don’t care that they have increased graduation requirements. About 85% of freshman don’t care or like their new graduation requirements. Only about 15% of the freshman dislike the fact that they have different graduation requirements. Our bias didn’t work as we expected it to, but it could be due to the fact that the freshmen truly feel neutral on the subject.

  11. If we were to conduct this survey again we would do cluster sampling to make collecting the data easier. • We would also make the scale from 1 to 4 so that there is no neutral answer. • We would include more leading questions to obtain a better bias. Do it Again?
