  1. Godliness add to your faith… (2 Pet. 1:5-9)

  2. Previous Characteristics • faith - conviction of truth of divine things • virtue - courage to choose right from wrong • knowledge - understanding of God’s word • self-control - mastery of thoughts, actions • perseverance – staying the course

  3. Introduction • godliness (eusebeia) – pious, devout, reverent – doing that which pleases God • more than just being a good person – asks the question, what is our motive? (1 Tim. 6:3-5) • God seeks sincerity, not a hypocritical outward showing of works (Mt. 6:1-6) • each of these traits are essential – without true godliness, would look good, but be lost

  4. The Role of Godliness • sole concern of the godly is God’s will • many are in the church because it suits them, then leave when it gets tough (Jn. 6:66-69) • faithful until death (Rev. 2:10) • hypocrite has little defense against sin, false doctrine (2 Pet. 2:9)(Col. 2:23)(2 Tim. 3:1-5) • the power of godliness enables us to… • repent (2 Cor. 7:10), pray (Heb. 5:7), be content (1 Tim. 6:6), be accepted by God (Heb. 12:28)

  5. Growing in Godliness • continue in doing good, but be mindful of which pleases you more – the praise of others, or the blessing of God (Gal. 1:10) • pursue godliness by sincerely searching out the will of God (1 Tim. 6:11-12) • exercise towards godliness by building the habit of acting in love of God (1 Tim. 4:6-9)

  6. Conclusion • there are many reasons to live a patient and self-controlled life, the most important being a sincere fellowship with God • nothing else matters if we do not have that • a day is coming where God will judge both action and intent (2 Pet. 3:10-12) • let the hypocrite return their every thought and moment to service, glory, and joy of the Lord
