ORGANISATION • Homework-Parents responsibilities are to: Monitor; Supervise; Support • Students are responsible for the completion of homework and assignments(don’t excuse your child) • Students are responsible for the completion of assignments(not parent work) • Start planning time in weekly timetable for work/assignments. Children start managing their time • Encourage students to set goals • Give children responsibilities at home
PERSISTENCE • Encourage your child to Work tough-Start challenging your child to stick with tasks • Effort-putting in maximum effort despite lack of interest • Hard work now!/Do it now!-Don’t look for excuses to put it off • Encourage positive mindset – “You can do it!”
CONFIDENCE • Encourage –I can do it! • Be realistic! (The aim is to reach THEIR potential) • Encourage being independent-having a go at tasks • Encourage your child to take risks-be prepared to fail (There are safe risks at school) • Children will not grow in confidence if you are stepping in to ‘save’ them/or demanding too much of them • Encourage positive attitude – Success V Failure
RESILIENCE • Where does this sit on a catastrophe scale?(Is it the worst thing in the world?) “It’s not the end of the world” • I Can Stand It-thinking,’ While I don’t like it-I can stand it!’ • Self calming-it’s important to learn how to de-stress • It’s okay to fail-bounce back(learn from mistakes) • Accept Yourself (I am not hopeless!) • Being Independent-Idon’t need everyone to approve of me all the time • Problem solving • “Build a bridge and get over it”
GETTING ALONG • Encourage children to solve their own social issues • Learn how to be a good friend(it’s not all about me) • Be tolerant • Play by rules • Think first • Be wary of social media(this is now part of primary school life-parents need to educate their children about responsible use) • Social responsibilities
