3. Fire Prevention It is the responsibility of EVERY EMPLOYEE to assist in fire prevention procedures & practices within the facility

4. Fire Prevention • Report fire hazards immediately to your supervisor and/or maintenance • Monitor resident rooms for fire hazards • All flammable products must be properly labeled & stored in a safe place • Never empty ashtrays into wastepaper baskets

5. Fire Prevention Never leave dangerous equipment unattended Read instructions before using any electrical or gas powered equipment Important: According to the National Fire Protection Association Life Safety code, hand hygiene products containing 60% or greater alcohol concentration are highly flammable.

6. R.E.A.C.T. R – Remove people from immediate dang  Also from across the hall and other side E – Ensure doors and windows are closed  In rooms & all hallways A – Activate the alarm  Pull nearest pull station  Page “Code Red & fire location” 3 times C – Call 9-1-1  State only the facts you know  Report back to charge person after call T – Try to extinguish the fire  At least 2 people present & fire is no bigger.

7. R.E.A.C.T. While waiting for the fire department to arrive: • Follow direction of the nurse-in-charge • Send a person outside to help direct fire crew • Remove residents past the nearest fire doors • Close all doors to confine the fire to a small area • Bring fire extinguishers to the fire location • Clear all obstacles from hallways, access, exit routes

8. Key Points to Remember • Never call “fire” – always use “Code Red” • Keep calm & never run during a Code Red situation • Use a landline to call 9-1-1; do not use cell phones • All staff in the building, whether on duty or not must respond to a Code Red situation • Never use the elevator(s) during a Code Red • Never open a closed door without checking for warmth and/or smoke

9. Key Points to Remember • Evacuated rooms needs the magnetic “E” decals on the outside door frames of the rooms 18-24 inches above the floor • Only upon the request of the fire department can the fire alarm be silenced • Any residents on oxygen are always moved to a safe area well away from the fire area (past fire doors)

10. Using a Fire Extinguisher • P – Pull the locking pin out completely • A – Aim for the base of the fire • S – Squeeze the extinguisher nozzle/handle • S – Use a sweeping motion (left to right) when squeezing the nozzle/handle Note: At least 2 people must be present & the fire is no bigger than a garbage can. If available, try to have as many fire extinguishers as possible.

11. If the Fire is NOT in your Area • Stop all activity • Gather all the residents together in a safe area • Close all doors and windows • Clear hallways of all objects/equipment • Keep residents and visitors from moving around • Be calm and reassuring • Listen for further instructions • Resume activity only after “Code Red All Clear” is announced

12. Education Requirements • Annual Compulsory In-services • Fire Alarm Drills at least once a year • Participation in Fire Drill Walkthroughs
