  1. Language learning is vital - from a human perspective - from a political perspective A coherent language policy is essential for our AEFE schools.

  2. A plurilingual education requires a choice of languages • It builds the capacity to learn languages/ understand how they function

  3. Plurilingual /pluricultural skills -communicate linguistically and interact culturally -skills and languages should not be seen as separate, superimposed, juxtaposed but as a complex and integrated web of skills and knowledge

  4. Equal access The AEFE network is based on the French education system – education and excellence for all. In languages this requires a PERSONALIZED PATHWAY TO SUCCESS IN LANGUAGES

Language Teaching • The European Framework encourages linguistic diversity from a young age • Requires expertise and adaptation to local context and resources • EMILE/DNL is necessary to this process • A rigid 50/50 system unnecessary (the word “Bilingual” should be avoided to describe such systems – misnomer) – it is not a guarantee of quality / efficiency • Flexibility is essential in the organisation

Any language policy should be integrated into the School Project and approved by the Inspectors and the Service Pedagogique at the AEFE • Languages are both the object and the means - articulatelanguageteachingwith the acquisition of knowledge in differentsubjects. • Allow all students to have French as a second mother tongue

In order to ensureplurilingualismwe must: • developteachingin the languages and of the languages (diversifysubjectstaught in otherlanguages) • givepriority to situations facilitatinglanguage acquisition and experience. • consolidate the mothertongue • use diversified/complementaryteachingmethodsratherthanmechanicallysuperposingthem • globalise languagehours and varytheir distribution

  8. put in place a schoolpolicy for national languagecertificates • open up International Sections fromprimarywith the language of the host country • Interactive and innovativeteachingmethods • Actions Pedagogiques Pilotes

  9. It is a trueskill to learnlanguages and to learninanotherlanguage, to discover the world and to thinkusingtheselanguages as a medium. A skillwhich the AEFE shouldbe able to develop for thosestudentswho are entrusted to us.
