  6. Mr. Livingstone I Presume • David Livingstone- Explorer who felt that spreading Christianity and opening Africa’s interior would end the slave trade. • Henry Stanley- journalist who found Livingstone.

  7. The Boer War • Boers- Dutch farmers who fought the Zulu tribe. • Boer Wars- Wars fought between the Dutch and the British over diamonds and gold.

  8. Africa: Berlin Conference • Tensions among the European powers seeking African colonies led to the Berlin West Africa Conference (1884-1885) • Berlin Conference- • Conference devising rules for the colonization of Africa.

Later Problems • The arbitrary boundaries of the Berlin Conference did not take into consideration the natural divisions of the African people (religion, culture, language, ethnicity, etc) • The invention of rigid grouping of different groups and the establishment of artificial tribal boundaries became one of the greatest obstacles to nation building and stability in much of Africa during the 20th Century
