Further Explanation of The Twelve and Mission (1) Matt 10:1-4; Mark 3:7-12; Luke 9:1-6 show Jesus appointing twelve disciples: Simon Peter; his brother Andrew; Philip; Thomas; Bartholomew; Matthew (or: Levi); James son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean; James son of Zebedee; his brother John; Judas Iscariot.

Further Explanation of The Twelve and Mission (2) There are nine disciples with identity in the Gospel of John. • Seven are among the Twelve in Matthew, Mark, and Luke: (1) Simon Peter; (2) his brother Andrew; (3) Philip; (4) Thomas; (5) James son of Zebedee; (6) his brother John; (7) Judas. • An eighth disciple in John’s Gospel is Nathaniel (John 1:45-49; 21:2). • A ninth disciple in John’s Gospel is “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 20:2; 13:23; 19:26; 21:7, 20).

  15. Which NT Gospel contains a speech by Jesus saying, “I am the Good Shepherd”? (Matthew; Mark; Luke; or John) Answer: • John 10:1-18. The statement about the good shepherd begins in 10:11: “I am the good shepherd.   17. Summary (1) In this lesson we have learned: Matthew 1:2-17 and Luke 3:23-38 have genealogies (family trees) for Jesus. Matthew’s begins with Abraham up to Joseph through 3 sets of 14 generations. Luke’s goes from Joseph back to Adam, son of God. The Last Meal in John’s Gospel (13:1-30) does not contain, “This is my body,” and “This is the new covenant in my blood.” Instead, Jesus washes the feet of the disciples. Mary’s Magnificat is only in Luke 1:46-55, where she says, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”

  18. Summary (2) Luke’s Gospel contains a Mission of 70 (10:1-20), in addition to a Mission of the Twelve (Luke 9:1-6; cf. Matt 10:1-15; Mark 6:7-13). John’s Gospel does not have Jesus select 12 disciples or send 12 out on a Mission. Rather, seven of the Twelve are present in John’s Gospel, plus Nathaniel and “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” Jesus’ Good Shepherd speech is in John 10:1-18.
