Understanding Musical Instrument Classifications

This guide categorizes musical instruments into four main families: strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion. String instruments like viola, bass, cello, and violin produce sound through vibrating strings. Brass instruments such as trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba create sound via buzzing into their mouthpieces. Woodwind instruments, including flute, saxophone, bassoon, and harmonica, require blowing air into them. Lastly, percussion instruments like drums, triangles, tambourines, and guiros produce sound by being hit, shaken, or scraped.
