  2. The Introduction What careers use mathematics? Grades 5th-through 8th Have you ever found yourself asking your math teacher, “When will we ever use this? Did you know that many careers that students will have in their future, involve using mathematics? We are going to explore some websites that will allow you to see what types of careers use mathematics.

  3. The Task • You and your partner are going to be exploring several sites that will inform you of different careers that incorporate mathematics. • You will be keeping a list of the different careers you find throughout your research. • Following this activity, the whole class will create a poster of the different careers that use mathematics. • The final project will be to explore one particular career that you found to be interesting.

  4. The Process • Brainstorm some different careers that you think involve using mathematics. • Now explore the following sites, write down 10 new careers that you discovered. • Were you surprised by any of these careers that you found? • Compare your first list to the list that you found while you were exploring the websites. • Choose one career that you found interesting and would like to further explore.

  5. The Resources • http://www.staff.olympia.org/external/classes/Staudenmeier/Careers/careers_that_require_mathematics.htm Click on any of the five links to help you explore the different careers • http://www.kids.gov/6_8/6_8_fun_activities.shtml Click on the link that says Grades 6-8 Scroll down to Math Click on Careers • http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~kouba/MathJobs.html Read through this site to find different careers

  6. The Process • Once you have explored the sites and written down some careers, you will now explore some interactive mathematical games. • These games allow you to see how mathematics is used in many careers. • Check out these sites and try some of the games: • Hoodamath.com • Click on- Play Games • Scroll down and Click- Arithmetic Games • Pick different to try

  7. The Process • Now that you have two separate lists, you and your partner must go through your lists and compile them into one list. • As a whole class, we will create a poster of careers that use mathematics. • Each group, will tell the class what the one career they found most interesting to place on the poster board.

  8. Evaluation • Students will choose one career and further explore how mathematics is used in that career. • Students will need to write a paragraph consisting of the information they found about that career. • How is math used in this career? • What are some interesting facts about that career? • Does this career require college mathematics? • Would this be a career you would be interested in pursuing one day?

  9. Conclusion You have now become knowledgeable in the careers that involve mathematics!!! Do you think you would want to pursue a career in mathematics? What careers interest you? Did you know that so many different careers involved mathematics?

  10. Teacher’s Page • This webquest can easily be incorporated into any grade level in a mathematics classroom. • It is recommended that this webquest be done individually or with groups of 2-3 students. • The sources that a teacher uses must be suitable for that particular grade level. • These webquests are a great strategy for students who are visual learners and it is a great way to incorporate technology.
