Magnetic clouds in the solar wind: A numerical assessment study of analytical models

This study presents a numerical investigation and assessment of analytical models for magnetic clouds in the solar wind. The dynamics, evolution, and impact of magnetic clouds on the magnetosphere are analyzed using both analytical and numerical approaches. The results provide valuable insights into the behavior and characteristics of magnetic clouds, and potential future plans for further research are discussed.

  1. Magnetic clouds in the solar wind: A numericalassessment study of analytical models GiorgiDalakishvili Ruhr-University Bochum K.U.Leuven Ilia State University, Tbilisi Georgia

  2. Magnetic clouds-introduction Analytical models Numerical investigation Results Conclusion Future plans Summary

  3. Magnetic clouds-introduction ”Lightbulb” CME. The coronal mass ejection that occurred on Feb. 27, 2000 taken by LASCO C2 and C3. Sketch of the large-scale structure of a magnetic cloud. Source of picture: http://solar.physics.montana.edu/lundberg/magcloud.gif.

  4. Magnetic clouds-introduction • Magnetic cloud (MC) –isolated magnetic structure moving in solar wind • Low density (low temperature) • Low plasma beta (large magnetic field) • MCs affect magnetosphere

  5. Analytical models of dynamics of self-similarly evolving magnetic clouds

  6. Analytical solutions

  7. Results Investigation of the dynamics of magnetic clouds by a numerical approach

  8. Evolution of analytical solutions

  9. Case with a rotation of MC

  10. Conclusions • Analytical solutions were introduced • Analytical models were investigated by numerical approach • The cases when MCs maintain structure close to self-similar one were introduced • Analytical models maintain features of MCs for certain initial conditions

  11. Future plans Consider more realistic structures (less symmetry and assumptions) Consider more complicated and realistic background Study numerically MC’s dynamics for large scales: Sun-Earth Study interaction of MCs with interplanetary magnetic field and Earth’s magnetosphere Study influence of MCs on Earth’s atmosphere
