Chugiak High School • CHS opened in 1964 with 182 students • Our current enrollment is approximately 900 • The staff includes 53 certified teachers • 100% are Highly Qualified teachers • 65% have a Master’s degree or higher • CHS students score higher on college placement exams than the state and national averages:

Chugiak High School • The daily schedule: • 1st period begins at 7:30 am • There are 6 periods of 52 minutes each • Students are dismissed at 2:00 pm • PLC Mondays: 1st period starts at 8:15 am • Academic Programs at CHS: • World Discovery Seminar • Honors (for 9th & 10th grade) • Advanced Placement (for 10th, 11th, 12th grade) • Spanish Immersion • JROTC (Naval Science) • BioTaPP (Biotechnology) • Culinary Arts & Hospitality • AEL (English Learners) • Comprehensive SpEd

Differences Between Middle School and High School MIDDLE SCHOOL: • 7 or 8 classes • Quarter grades • Closed campus • Preparing for high school • Conferences are Student-Led • No GPA requirement for Sports and Activities • No formal credit system HIGH SCHOOL: • 6 classes • Semester grades + Final Exams • Open Campus • Preparing for collegeor vocation • Open conferences twice yearly • GPA of 2.0+ is required to be eligible for sports • Credits are required for graduation YOUR TRANSCRIPT IS A PERMANENT RECORD

Graduation RequirementsEach semester students are able to earn ½ credit per class • ENGLISH = 4 credits • HISTORY = 4 credits • SCIENCE = 3 credits • MATH = 3 credits • PE = 1.5 credits • ELECTIVES = 7.0 credits • TOTAL = 22.5 CREDITS These are the minimum requirements for graduation. Please note that in order to attend a competitive college, play NCAA sports, or receive scholarships, you may need more than these basic requirements.

World Languages CHS World Language Programs: • French • German • Spanish Levels offered: • I, II, III, IV • Advanced Placement • SpanishImmersion Learning a language supports academic achievement, provides cognitive benefits, and increases positive attitudes about other cultures and languages. Seal of Biliteracy: • Awarded to ASD students who have attained proficiency in two or more languages • CHS had 35 students earn this award in 2018

  13. Spanish Immersion CHS Spanish Immersion is the continuation of the program from Chugiak Elementary and Mirror Lake Middle School. CHS immersion courses are designed to be rigorous and challenging for students while preparing them for upper division university coursework. • 9th Grade: Perspectivas Literarias • 10th Grade: Vistas Juveniles del Mundo Hispano • 11th Grade: Estudios Latinoamericanos • 12th Grade: AP Spanish Language Students who complete the immersion program in their senior year earn the ASD “Language Immersion Completion Cord” to wear at the Chugiak High School graduation ceremony.

PE courses at CHS: Basketball First Aid Flag Football Impact Recreational Games Soccer Table Tennis Volleyball Weight Training Yoga Physical Education 1.5 Credits Required for graduation: 3 Semesters of PE/Health No longer required: Lifetime Personal Fitness ASAA-sanctioned sports or JROTC may waive some of your PE requirements

World Discovery Seminar What is WDS? • School-within-a-school for English, History, & Science • Employs a Socratic discussion-based learning strategy • Emphasizes primary sources and literature instead of textbooks • Hands-on activities & projects + community focus WDS Teachersat CHS: • Mrs. Thornton, Mrs. Torbensen, Mr. Mason, Mr. Gullett 9th Grade Program: Maximum of 34 students Lottery dates: • March 21st: Application deadline for lottery • March 29th: Parent notification of lottery results www.asdk12.org/lottery

Honors Program • For students who demonstrate academic ability and specific interests in an accelerated curriculum • Covers material more in depth and includes additional selections to increase connections between sources • Students read and analyze classic and modern literature and focus on academic writing • Goal is to teach techniques and AP strategies to help students succeed in future honors and AP courses. • Please note that Honors classes are not weighted in the calculation of GPA, but do have an honors designation on the student’s transcript Honors Teachers at CHS: • Ms. Reed & Ms. Armstrong

  18. Recommendation Forms Initial placement into high school core classes is based upon recommendations from your middle school teachers. Your current 8th grade teachers make recommendations for your English, History, Math and Science classes. Recommendations will be communicated to parents and students at a later date. Please talk to your current teachers if you have any questions.

  20. If you are planning on attending CHS, but you reside in another zone, you must submit a zone exemption using the online form. Spanish Immersion students that reside out of zone, also should submit a zone exemption form.
