  1. Children of Lir By Sarah b and Kaitlyn

  2. King Lirof Erin had four beautiful children, Finola, Aodh, Fiacre and Conn. King Lir had married and the children had a new stepmother. She cared for them at first but then realised that Lir loved his children more than her. This maddened her.

  3. She took the children out to a lake. She told them they could swim in the lake. As soon as the children got in, she pulled out her wand and turned them into four beautiful snow white swans.

  4. The stepmother told the four children, that they shall stay swans for 900 years and she left them with only their voices. They would spend 300 years on smooth lake Dervra,300 years on the sea of Moyle and 300 years at InisGlora.

  5. The stepmother told them they would be set free when they heard the Christian bell .Then she left them. Later, when their father was walking along the shore they called for him ‘father, our stepmother turned us in to swans for 900 years.’

  6. The father stared in surprise at this. He could not believe what he was hearing. He stormed back to the castle and banished the stepmother. He tried to return the 4 children as their human selves, but it would not work.

  7. He stayed with them for many years, until he passed away. The children missed their father dearly. After nine hundred years from travelling from lake to lake the children heard the Christian bells and were finally set free!
