  1. Curriculum Night 4th Grade“Meet the Teacher” Welcome to 4th Grade Peebles Elementary School 2018–2019

  2. Meet The 4th Grade Teachers! 4A: Mrs. Bennis-W.I.N. What I need! 4B: Mrs. Bosack—Social Studies 4C: Mrs. Brown—Science

  3. Homework—Assignment Book • 10-15 min. per grade level= 40-60 minutes + free reading time. • Assignment books have been given to each fourth grader. We fill these out each day. Students are expected to have something in each box, even if it happens to be the word NONE, signaling that there is no homework given in that class for that evening. • Parents should review assignment book every day! Let me know if there’s a problem. • Homework is not usually assigned on Fridays unless a student needs to catch up. Sometimes, there will be a test scheduled on a Monday. • We will do our best to honor Wonderful Wednesdays! • Remember, if it’s graded—It goes home. This will keep the expandable organized and not super-full.

  4. ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS: • Expandable File with at least 12 pockets. These were labeled on the first day of school. • Due to the size of the desks, please have your child use flat pencil bags or Ziploc baggies for crayons, markers, etc. instead of bulky pencil boxes. • Please use weekends to have students clean out backpacks and expandables and restock with sharpened pencils and other necessary supplies. Markers, glue sticks, scissors, white out, erasers, pencils, colored pen for checking work, highlighters. • Please check through your child’s expandable with them OFTEN to clean out unnecessary papers.

  6. Math (daily from 9:15—10:20) Math begins each day in fourth grade and lasts for approximately 65 minutes. We use targeted and differentiate instruction to all student-levels. The Reflex Math program boosts knowledge of basic facts and will occur instead of the Rocket math paper pencil practice. You can expect daily homework in math and additional work can be found using the online book.

  7. Math Concepts in 4th Grade • Place Value and Number Sense • Compare and Order Numbers • Addition and Subtraction • Time, Data Collection and Graphs • Multiplication and Division • Geometry and Algebra • Temperature • Fractions and Probability • Measurement and Decimals • Perimeter, Area, Volume • PSSA practice • Word problems

  8. Reading (Uninterrupted Time Daily) • Students experience many opportunities for practice and the application of concepts. • In addition, a series of leveled activities and resource materials exist to meet the varied needs of learners. • Various types of literature (Main and Paired Selections) • Robust Vocabulary • Comprehension (Focus Skills and Focus Strategies) • Use of Dictionary and Reference Sources

  9. Spelling ●There is a Spelling Packet that is kept in their expandable. ● Each morning, a page is given for morning work. They will often have additional work time during CA. If they do not complete the page, or they are absent, that will be assigned for homework. ● On Thursday, we will check the packet pages. ●Home practice of the weekly words are highly encouraged. ● The spelling grade is determined from your child’s weekly test which will almost always be on Friday.

  10. English and Writing • These subject areas are also integrated into the Reading Storytown series. Students will complete lessons and practice pages during class and may occasionally receive homework in this subject area. • All students will receive an Exceptional English! Packet to utilize for each Theme. This is a great study tool to practice the skills and to prepare for upcoming tests. • Occasionally incomplete class work may need to be finished at home. • Students will know in advance of all tests and complete in class assessments/quizzes. • English grades are taken from classwork, quizzes, and tests. Writing is not assigned a letter grade, but there will be marking indicators shown on the report card for the second and last nine weeks.

  11. Win W.I.N stands for What I Need following the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support) model. This class will take place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons.  It is data driven and differentiated based on what students need. Topics included during W.I.N are based on grade level standards and expectations. Instruction will align with PES targeted areas of growth as well as the PA Core. No specific grade will be given in W.I.N on the report card, but items will be graded and given to the ELA or math teacher for inclusion with report card grades.

  12. What is MTSS?Multi-Tiered System of Support • MTSS is evidence-based and addresses • academics & behavior • in a systematic, cyclical problem-solving process. • PA-MTSS is intended to help all students meet with continuous academic and behavioral success. • PDE 2017 • 5 Year Implementation Process • Year 2 of Implementation
