  1. Energy Transformations

  2. 2 Main Types of Energy • Kinetic Energy: the energy of motion (faster-more) • Potential Energy: stored energy (based on position, higher-more)

  3. The Law of Conservation of Energy • Energy cannot be created • Energy cannot be destroyed • It can be transferred from one form to another. • Thus, when the water at the top of the waterfall plunges over the edge, potential energy is converted to kinetic energy.

  4. Energy Transformations • As plates push against each other stress builds (potential energy). • When the plates move or break the energy is released as kinetics energy.

  5. Major types of energy… • Chemical • Radiant • Thermal • Nuclear • Mechanical • Electrical

  6. Chemical Energy • Energy stored in matter because of its chemical makeup • Examples: Food, wood, fossil fuels (gas, coal, oil), battery Potential Energy

  7. Radiant Energy • Energy carried by electromagnetic waves • Examples: Light, microwaves, X-rays, Sun, radio, satellite Kinetic Energy

  8. Thermal (Heat) Energy • Energy related to the temperature of a substance • Examples: moving particles • substances – the higher the temperature the faster the particles move. Kinetic Energy

  9. Nuclear Energy • Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom • Examples: splitting of an atom Potential Energy

  10. Mechanical Energy • Sum of total energy of matter because of its motion or position • Examples: wind, moving water, falling rocks, stretched spring, machines Kinetic Energy

  11. Electrical Energy • Energy produced by electric charges • Examples: electricity, lightning Kinetic Energy

  12. QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? RADIANT ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

  13. QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

  14. What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

  15. What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy

  16. What types of energy are shown below? Electrical, Mechanical and Radiant Energy

  17. What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy (yummy)

  18. What type of energy is shown below? Electrical Thermal Energy

  19. Draw a map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car. Use at least 5 different types of energy.

  20. Electrical Radiant Chemical Mechanical Thermal
