The Impact of Birth Year on Age at Marriage: A Study by Caitlin Carter, Rob Scottorn, and Haley Shimizu

In our project, we investigated whether birth year can predict the age of marriage. Our stratified random sample included data from 62 individuals (30 men and 32 women) gathered from diverse marriages. Our analyses included histograms and a scatter plot, revealing a 99% confidence level but only a correlation coefficient of 0.0485, indicating no significant correlation between birth year and marriage age. While our findings suggest birth year is not a strong predictor, we found a 60% chance of marriage occurring between ages 19 and 24.5.

  1. STATS FINAL PROJECT Caitlin Carter, Rob Scottorn, and Haley Shimizu

  2. Our Question? Is birth year a predictor in estimating age of marriage?

  3. Gathering Data Each member in our group agreed to gather information from ten men and ten women, making sure we didn’t get any two individuals from the same marriage. This makes our sample a stratified random sample. We gathered data from 62 people.

  4. Histogram of Current Age

  5. Histogram of Marriage Age

  6. 5 Number Summary

  7. Other Stats. Since we gathered data from 62 people and with our confidence level of 99% we would need .325 or greater, to show a correlation. We had .0485, so this demonstrates there is not a strong correlation.

  8. Scatter Plot

  9. Our Conclusion Birth year is not significant predictor in estimating age of marriage. However there is a 60% chance that you will be married between the ages of 19 and 24.5 years based on our sample. NO LINEAR CORRELATION
