  3. “and ever since he made a success he was very generous” • Gatsby, although wealthy, didn’t forget about his father - he kept his family values

  4. “if he’d of lived he’d of been a great man” • Shows contrast between himself and his son. Gatsby has molded the way he speaks and looks to the way he perceives wealthy people act. His father, however, shows no signs of wealth or aspirations with his unrefined grammar and poor speech.

  5. “bundled up in a long cheap ulster’ • Shows he’s not obsessed with wealth or materialism like his son, but dresses poorly (and warmly, considering it is only September and he’s wearing a heavy coat)
