  5. How do you ROUND a number? • Look for place value. (Position in which a digit is in the number) • Five or more, Raise the Score! • Four or less, Let it Rest!

  6. Characteristics: Estimation 5-9 round up ↑ 0-4 round down ↓

  7. Let’s Try It!-Do we round up or down? (Round to the nearest 10) • 2 ↓ 0 • 18 ↓ 20 • 45 ↓ 50 • 167 ↓ 170 • Remember!! • Five or more raise the score. • Four or less let it rest

  8. Process: 5,629 • Round to the nearest 100!! • 1) Circle the digit your rounding to. 5, 29 • 2) Underline the digit to the right. 5,629 • 3) If the underlined number is 5 or more raise the score (circle goes up 1) 4 or less let it rest (circle goes down to 0) • 4) Use 0 as a place holder 5,600 6

  9. Example: 562 and 278 • Nearest to 10! 5 2→ 560 2 8→280 • Circle number and underline number to the right 562+278= ↓ ↓ 560+280= 560 +280 840 Answer 6 7
