“Ageism is incompatible with modern democracy.” What do you think? Explain your opinion. 3 Marks MARKS Definitions Examples Evaluation - Conclusion Ageism is discrimination against someone because of how old they are. For example, it was argued that the BBC were ageist towards Moira Stewart because she was seen as an ‘older’ woman. Such discrimination suggests that society values a particular age group rather than the abilities of the individual. Therefore, it is incompatible with modern democracy. REASONING FROM SPECIFIC TO GENERAL INDUCTIVE LOGIC
“Ageism is incompatible with modern democracy.” What do you think? Explain your opinion. 3 Marks Ageism is discrimination against someone because of how old they are. For example, some people thought that the BBC were ageist towards Moira Stewart because she was seen as an ‘older’ woman. This sort of discrimination can be damaging particularly in the work place because it gives the impression that society values a particular age group rather than the talents or abilities of the individual. Therefore, I believe that ageism has no place in modern democracy.

“Ageism is incompatible with modern democracy.” What do you think? Explain your opinion. 3 Marks Ageism is discrimination against someone because of how old they are. My position is that such practice is incompatible with modern democracy for a number of reasons. Firstly, older people often have a great deal of talent combined with a broad experience of life, which younger people lack. Getting rid of such people would impoverish our society as a whole. Secondly, the Declaration of Human Rights states that people should not be discriminated against on the basis of age, and ageism clearly contradicts this principle. If ageism is given room in our society we are running the risk of breaking an important international convention. Thirdly, as our population ages our society cannot afford to marginalise an important and growing section of its population. Older people live longer and are much fitter than before and therefore must play an ever-increasing role in social life. To conclude, on the strength of the arguments above I believe that ageism has no place in modern democracy.
