  3. Potsdam Conference July 16-Aug 2, 1945 Meeting between new British Prime Minister Clement Attlee, New U.S. President Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin Discussed what to do with Germany post World War II

  4. United Nations Established in 1945 by 50 nations including the U.S, China, Soviet Union and Great Britain

  5. U.N Continued Meant to prevent another world war from occurring again by deliberating important issues before any action was taken

  6. Post World War II • The Cold War was a series of engagements between the Soviet Union and the United States between 1945-1990(1).

  7. Definitions: Communism: A type of political system where everything is shared equally among all members of society- Soviet Communism was built around the working class Capitalism: A type of political system where people are given the chance to amass as much wealth as possible.

What started the Cold War? • The “race” for Berlin- United States/Great Britain/France vs. the Soviet Union. • Stalin’s buffer zone (Iron Curtain) • To ensure that the Soviet Union could not/would not be invaded again. • Took over Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania

  14. U.S. Reaction Led to the “Truman Doctrine (1947)”- Basis for Containment under president Eisenhower.

  15. U.S. Reaction Cont… Truman Doctrine gave aid to stop Communists from taking control of Greece and Turkey Aid was successful but raised tensions between Communists and Capitalists

  16. Formation of Israel U.N. Voted Israel into existence in 1947- led to an Arab-Israel War in 1948 (the first of many)

  17. What increased tensions between Capitalists and Communists?- 1949 • Two main things happened in 1949 to ensure that the Cold War would occur: • The Russians detonated their first nuclear bomb- years ahead of what Americans thought was possible And…

  18. Increased Tensions… • Cultural Revolution occurred in China- China turned Communist executing 10 million people and starving another 30 million (throughout the entire revolution)
