  1. What impact did Abe Lincoln’s election have on the United States? By: Catherine Miosi

  2. Election • In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States. • He was elected the 16th president and was the first president ever to be a republican.

  3. Secession in the South • When president Lincoln was elected the south left the Union because Abe was against slavery and the south wanted it. • South Carolina was the first to secede in December 1860. Then Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas followed. After Lincoln officially became president Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina also left the Union. These states became known as the Confederacy.

  4. Some things that occurred.. • Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which helped many slaves become free. • Abe made the Gettysburg address speech which is now known to be one of the best speeches in history.

  5. Abe Lincolns Assassination • In April, 1865, Abraham was assassinated. • He accomplished many things in his presidency like ending slavery, however by far his biggest accomplishment was saving the Union; that was his goal from the very beginning and by accomplishing this he made America the country it is today. • Now Abraham Lincoln is considered one of the greatest American presidents for all of his accomplishments.

  6. “A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect that it will cease to be divided. It will become all the one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward until it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new, north as well as south." - Abraham Lincoln
