  3. Introduction • Problem Statement How does Facebook affect the Social Health of Year 1 RI Boys? (Note: Social Health in terms of communication skills and relationship) • Hypothesis Facebook affects the communication skills and relationships of Year 1 RI Boys. • Explanation Facebook is very popular among RI Boys according to the statistical evidence of the survey we had conducted. Thus, we felt that it would be worthwhile to see if our hypothesis is right and find ways to curb the problem as social health is a key aspect of an enjoyable school life. • Brief project description Our project is about whether Facebook affects communication skills and relationships of Year 1 RI Boys. We also aim to find ways to curb problems.

Methodology Overall Methodology • Did PI to enable ourselves to identify what we wanted to research about. • Analysed all our PIs. • Took out some of the good points from each PI. • Compiled up all our good points and made it into a Group Project Proposal (GPP). • To get more solid evidence, we conducted a survey with RI Year1 respondents. • In order to reinforce our findings, we conducted an interview with Ms Jamie Ng, a counsellor in Raffles Institution.

  5. Methodology Survey • Prepared 10 questions to be given out to 20 Year 1 RI Boys. • Compiled up the results from the20 survey respondents. • Made a social survey report in order to obtain a clearer perpective of the issue.

  6. Methodology Interview • Did an interview with RI Counsellor, Ms Jamie. • Asked her 10 questions pertaining to our research topic. • Gathered all the answers. • Did the transcript. • Compiled the questions and the transcript and made it into an interview report.

Findings Survey • 80% of respondents use Facebook. • More respondents said that they felt positive after using Facebook. • 56% of respondents said that they became withdrawn from others and that it cause misunderstandings among friends and family. • 44% of respondents said that it cause indifference in attitude within family. • Most respondents use Facebook for either 1 hour or less or more than 8 hours a week on average.

  10. Findings • We provided our respondents with a few options on the effects of Facebook usage.

  11. Application of findings Our findings proved that Facebook affects relationships and the communication skills of RI Year 1 pupils. Thus, we have come up with a few ways to curb this problem • During CLE lessons, teachers should focus more on the importance of family bonding. • Parents should bring their child on small trips or vacations to spend quality time with them. • For year 1s, there should be a separate course on communication skills. • During PITs, mini debates can be held, to improve relationships with the class and at the same time, improve communication skills. • Pupils should also make the conscious effort to communicate with others face-to-face with appropriate gestures and eye contact.

  12. Conclusion Limitations • The survey was only conducted on 20 respondents. So, the information we got was rather limited. • There were also not much of diverse opinions by respondents because of the number of them. • As we only conducted this survey on individual students, we did not get a different perspective, perhaps parents.

  13. Conclusion • Problems encountered and how they were solved We had not narrowed down our topic enough. Thus, we were not able to get focused results. Thus, we had to narrow it down to our current one. Some of our survey respondents did not really take the time to answer our questions. Thus, some surveys were just a clump of scribbles. So, we had to conduct those few surveys again with different respondents.

  14. Conclusion • Future extensions This research could be conducted on a more wide scale basis. Instead of RI Year1 students, it could be teenagers from ages 14-19 in Singapore. Opinions can also be taken from the point of view of parents so that different perspectives can be acquired. A survey can be conducted on 50 respondents for very diverse opinions on this issue.

We thank them for their timely and useful opinions that helped us improve our work. We would also like to thank our fellow classmates for sharing their thoughts about our project and giving us improvement points. We also would like to thank Ms. Jamie, our interviewee, for giving us an insight on this issue and for giving us invaluable information to aid us in our work.
